I'd be interested in your thoughts on the event if you actually attended. I've been volunteering at conventions throughout the SF Bay Area for over 20 years, now, and everything I read during the course of the weekend left me with the impression that this was a clusterfuck of the first order.

Are you saying that there was talk before this con got started it would be bad? Please tell me were this was talk about as I love to see who why as tons of people that say just days before plus the hotel it self seem to be working against it.
The cons problems seem to be due to people believe things would have gone wrong and not coming at the last second than from bad con planing. and When you tell some you are coming and then don't well you know what that looks like .

I looked at what happen and why before I blame the con's planners and Rodent Know I don't back anyone if I think they are full of it..
All the guest that were said to be there were there. it was those that gave support that pulled and with out and reason I could see.

The Hotel it self has some problems as well as it seem not work well with the con and did some really stupid things The con will have to deal with this week.

I went and I did help out as I planed .. the people that ran this con were not at fault for some the problems it had but any first con has problems this con was being helped by someone not wanting it to do good.

I really like to hear anything that was going on before con that was being said. as parties that say they would be there seem to just cancel at the last second with no reason and if they has come it would have been a blast.

Some let people know some we have not had word one from .. I got one message from a friend that said the Hotel cancel their rooms due to over booking..the con could not help that ..I like to see if other had some problems.with the Hotel and getting a room or had rooms canceled.

At best any problems I saw were from people Assuming that things would go bad or the con was going to be a train wreck but if the people would just shown up all would have been great.

I am not saying the cons planing was not with some problems but that the problems that happen were not under their control or could have been foreseen.

In all anyone that gave their word they would be there and then back out last min and did not have the guts to say they would not becoming are at best to blame .. and remember this con was for the Children's hospital to help those with Cancer...by not showing up and or sabotaging this con before it happen just took money from those kids... you go tell them why you could not come because other just didn't want you to..

      Please ..get a life

Let's see. They didn't pay for the A/V equipment they had ordered (which is why they didn't _have_ any - Smash isn't a fool). One of their major guests cancelled. They lost fan-table requests that had been put in months in advance. They chose the same weekend as the San Diego Comic-Con for a first-year event, and failed to advertise to the extent that I heard many people after-the-fact saying "There was a con this weekend?"

What little advertising I saw them do was focused at other science-fiction conventions...and yet, when I go out to their website, apart from two B-list media guests all I see is something that looks like a martial-arts conference.

Was there negative press pre-event? Only as "I've got a bad feeling about this" blog posts from people who, like myself, have been convention organizers themselves, know what the pitfalls are, and got pushback from the Con-X-Treme organizers when they tried to offer assistance.

The convention organizer told an attendee TO HIS FACE that he didn't want that person there. That right there is inexcusable.

Everything you have stated places the blame on everyone but the organizers. I mentioned specific examples of areas where the organizers had a responsibility that they failed to fulfill (paying for their rented equipment; advertising their event; selecting a time and place for their event that did not conflict with another event that was likely to pull from the same target demographic). How is that proving your point?

Yep There have been con going on at the same time with the same type and target demographics for years now all have work well.
2 cons nearly 300 +miles a part should have not problems being the same weekend..

As for some "wanting to get paid .Well when some ask to "Help Out" and to "Work with and on the con" and they change how and what the mean at the last second or there in .. well then it as I stated There are those that didn't want to work or see thing go off as it should.

Rodent You know if I back something Like con that I know all that should be going on and why is would not have gone on.
I will not say more as I don not feel I need to.

Many thing happen and your statements Kisten show you know more than you first said and by this you show you know those in part that Did not want this con to happen if not then why even talk about it? This very clear in both your first and second and now your 3rd post. If you don't anything you should not have said so much.

It very sad when those to are asked to trust fail to be worth that trust. Events happen and things will change and this is how things work.

Sorry Rodent didn't mean to start a war just try to get people to con that would have been great if those who has said they were going to help and come had even shown up.. All the guest did(and Yes all guest stated did show) and they had a very good time. No first con goes well but if they go bad there are reasons and they do not happen again.

              Thanks Rodent
